Serendipity can be defined as the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. It's a fortunate discovery, a blessing you never expected at a time when you least expected it. It's also a movie starring Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack during which two people reconnect again after a long absence catalyzed by a series of magical events.
I've experienced serendipity probably a half dozen times; however, the occasion that stands out most significantly to me is the Monday morning when Grisel Scarantino walked into my life.
Grisel doing a virtual belly dancing class in her home.
When my family and I moved to the Tampa, Florida area in July 2013, we had taken a leap of faith. We'd picked a spot, found jobs, and the rest was a series of serendipitous events that led to three of the best years of my life.
That fall morning when Griz walked into the classroom where I was leading orientation, I hadn't been expecting anything magical to happen that day, but you better believe it did.
Griz, Ava, and me in 2018.
As soon as Griz entered the room, her gigantic, bright smile lit up the entire building. At the time, our mutual friend Ava and I were setting up for our weekly onboarding program and Griz was the first person to arrive. Although we didn't know it that morning, Ava and I would soon discover Grisel's magical influence on our lives and the lives of the rest of our Soul Sister Tribe.
In 2019, after beating an acute, deadly form of cancer, Griz made her own leap of faith: she and a colleague started a small business. Last year, in 2020, after a clear, zero-cancer report, she stepped off the ledge of her corporate role and onto the path of career coaching entrepreneurship. In only two years, she beat cancer and quit a job she hated to make room for a career she adores.
After beating cancer, Grisel is living her BEST LIFE as a work-life balance coach.
A couple of months ago, Griz came to me with an idea for her very first book, a testimonial piece that encourages other aspiring career coaches seeking enough [courage, timing, permission, you name it!] to leave their dead-end corporate jobs and step onto a path that will provide them with an abundance of joy and purpose.
Grisel Scarantino gives me joy and purpose, and working with her on publishing her first book feels like serendipity: like she had it in her all along and then everything culminated in perfect timing and place.
Y'all please help me congratulate Grisel on finishing her first draft and let's welcome her with open arms into the Indie Writer's community!
The first card of the tarot is the Fool, a person embarking on an adventure, taking a risk, a leap of faith, and trusting the universe with details like timing and opportunity. Cheers to you, Grisel! May your indie writer journey be as foolish and carefree and as limitless as the stars!

Next Magic Monday, I’m sharing the second post of my Celebrating Black Creatives series. Right on time for Valentine’s Day, I’m reviewing The True Heart Intuitive Tarot by Rachel True... and no matter your relationship status, I have a fun little Valentine’s Day spread activity to remind you of just how valuable and appreciated you are in all of your unique splendor.
The Card(s) of the Day:
In her more than thirty years as a storyteller and visual designer, Amanda “Mandy” Hughes has written and designed over a dozen works of upmarket, literary, and women’s fiction under pen names A. Lee Hughes and Mandy Lee.
Mandy is the founder of Haint Blue Publishing Company, LLC, an editing and design service that helps indie writers grow in their craft and achieve their self-publishing goals. Although she earned a Bachelor and Master of Science in Psychology, she has yet to figure out her family, much less herself.
When she’s not writing, Mandy loves going to the movies, theater, traveling, nature walks, birdwatching, margarita-making, and binge-watching The Office. She is a tarot enthusiast who uses the cards to promote wellness and enhance creativity. She lives in Georgia with her husband and four boys, two of whom are furrier than the others (but not by much).
